We are bursting with pride to celebrate one of our own — Anna Dieffenbach — on completing the 2026 Gaucho Derby, finishing in a tied 22nd place in her very first time competing in the race. From the mountains and woods of Vermont to the wild pampas of Patagonia, Anna's adventure has been nothing short of extraordinary.
Anna grew up trail riding through the Vermont wilderness and has long found peace in the solitude of remote wildlife conservation fieldwork. That love of wild landscapes and horses clearly served her well in the most demanding equestrian environment on earth.
"In a joint 22nd finish, ADI rode an excellent race despite the luck that was or wasn't dealt them." — Race officials, Day 9 report
About the Race
The Gaucho Derby
Held in the remote wilderness of Patagonia, Argentina, the Gaucho Derby is a 500km, 10-day multi-horse endurance race across some of the most dramatic terrain on earth — mountain passes, rivers, glaciers, forests, and open pampas. Riders self-navigate with only a topographic map and GPS, change horses at stations along the route, and must pass rigorous veterinary checks at every stop. They carry all their own gear within a strict 20lb weight limit, camp alongside their horses, and face Patagonia's ferocious and unpredictable winds every single day. Horse welfare is paramount — horses arriving at checks with elevated heart rates result in time penalties, meaning smart horsemanship and genuine care for the animals is as important as speed.
The 2026 edition drew 42 riders from around the world and proved to be a dramatic race from start to finish. Patagonian winds battered the field, the leaderboard shifted with every vet check, and the finish-line pulse-down drama had spectators holding their breath. Anna crossed the line on Day 9 alongside fellow competitors, having ridden with courage and care across the full breadth of Patagonia.
To complete the Gaucho Derby at all — in any position — is a genuine achievement. To do it on your first attempt, among an elite international field, is exceptional. It takes months of dedicated preparation, true horsemanship, wilderness skill, physical endurance, and the kind of grit that doesn't quit when things get hard. Anna demonstrated all of that and more.
On behalf of the entire Dog River Horse Club membership: congratulations, Anna. We are so proud of you. □□
